Why Some Patients Need Specialty Lenses

Standard soft lenses work well for many people, but not every eye is easy to fit. At Good Eye Optometry, we offer specialty lenses designed to improve comfort, stability, and vision for patients with more complex needs. These lenses are often used when dryness, corneal irregularities, or prescription strength make conventional options ineffective.

Whether you’ve been told contacts won’t work for you or you’re looking for better long-term results, specialty lenses may be the next step.

Scleral Lenses for Dry Eye & Irregular Corneas

Scleral lenses are large-diameter rigid lenses that rest on the white of the eye (the sclera) and vault over the cornea. They create a fluid-filled space that can protect the eye’s surface, improve moisture retention, and deliver clearer, more stable vision.

We recommend scleral lenses for patients with:

  • Chronic dry eye
  • Keratoconus
  • Irregular or steep corneas
  • Post-surgical changes (LASIK, corneal transplants)
  • Significant lens intolerance or instability

These lenses are also used therapeutically in cases where surface protection is needed due to ocular surface disease.

Rigid Gas-Permeable (RGP) Lenses for Stable Vision

Rigid gas-permeable lenses (also called RGPs or GP lenses) are smaller, breathable lenses that provide excellent visual clarity, especially for patients with high prescriptions or irregular corneas.

RGPs may be recommended for:

  • Moderate to advanced astigmatism
  • Early-stage keratoconus
  • High or unstable prescriptions
  • Patients who haven’t achieved stable vision with soft lenses

While they require an adjustment period, many patients find that RGPs provide sharper vision and longer-lasting wear than standard lenses.

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) for Myopia Control

Orthokeratology (ortho-k) lenses are worn overnight to gently reshape the front of the eye (the cornea), allowing for clear vision during the day without glasses or contact lenses. These lenses are most often used to slow the progression of myopia (nearsightedness) in children and teens.

Ortho-k is a key part of our myopia management program and may be recommended for:

  • Children or teens with progressive myopia
  • Active patients who want to avoid daytime lens wear
  • Patients seeking a non-surgical alternative to LASIK

Many families appreciate the long-term benefits of ortho-k lenses, especially when started early.

Toric & Multifocal Lenses for Complex Prescriptions

Some patients with astigmatism or presbyopia benefit from customized lens designs that go beyond standard disposables. We offer:

Toric lenses for astigmatism—including soft and RGP designs for more precise correction.

Multifocal lenses for presbyopia—designed to support both distance and near vision without the need for reading glasses.

These lenses can be tailored based on visual demands, eye shape, and lens tolerance.
